About the library

History

The NRURL was founded in October, 1929 as  a territorial research library at the Institute of National Economy (the first territorial library in Siberia). When the library was opened its collections were enriched with those of the Society For Studying the Productive Forces library, Siberian Book Chamber, library of Kolyvan and Voskresensk factories, and many other sources. Since 1932 the library has been receiving a copy of every book published in the Soviet Union and Russia.

After division of the Siberian territory in 1930 the library became known as the West-Siberian Territorial Research Library. In 1937 the library achieved regional status after the West-Siberian territory was divided into Novosibirsk region and Altai territory.

Famous ethnographer and bibliographer Panteleymon Kazarinov (1885-1937) became the first head of the Library.

From 1940 through 1962 the library was headed by Josef Samoylov (1902-1986). One of his successful
initiatives was organizing  West-Siberian Zonal Union Of Regional Bibliography.

From 1971 through 2007 the director of the NRURL was Nelina Bredikhina, an honored worker of culture

Since March 1, 2007 the library has been headed by Svetlana Tarasova.
